There’s a unique kind of exhaustion that creative entrepreneurs carry: the mix of endless ideas, emotional labor, client expectations, and the pressure to constantly “show up.” It’s hard to know what to focus our energy on. And often we get so burnt out from trying to do it all that it really does start to affect our creativity.

And if you run a quieter, introvert-friendly business, you feel this even more deeply.

You know that taking care of you matters.
But actually practicing self care?
That’s usually the first thing to fall off your list.

In order to create and nurture our ideas; we need space and we need to take care of ourselves.

This post gives you a calming path back to yourself. A cozy self care plan that supports your creativity, your productivity, and your nervous system.

Why Creative Entrepreneurs Need a Self Care Plan (More Than Most)

Creatives often:

  • Overgive
  • Overwork
  • Absorb emotion from clients
  • Sit for long periods
  • Run passion-led businesses with blurry boundaries

This combination makes mental health self care not just helpful but essential for sustainable success.

I’ve personally experienced this in two different creative industries. When I was a Hairstylist working in a salon and as a Website Designer. Sometimes it can be hard to stick our boundaries or make time to care for ourselves simply because we love what we do. We might not even think we need to step away because we are so passionate and enjoy what we do. However, everything does catch up to you. Especially when your passion becomes your “work”.

Signs You Might Need a Self Care Reset:

  • You feel chronically overwhelmed
  • Your creativity feels foggy
  • You’re emotionally drained by client work
  • You feel guilty resting
  • Your body feels tense almost every day

How To Practice Self Care (Step-by-Step)

This plan is designed to be gentle, doable, and built around how your creative mind naturally works.

1. Begin With a “Creative Check-In” (2 Minutes)

Before diving into your day, pause and ask yourself:

  • What does my mind need today?
  • What does my body need?
  • What does my energy need?

This awareness becomes the foundation for practical self care without trying to create habits you know you won’t stick to!

For me, this 2 minute check in happens when I’m having my morning coffee. I’ve already gotten out of bed and started moving my body.

During this time, I acknowledge where I’m at with compassion. Somedays I feel 110% right away and sometimes I need to ease into my day. The most important thing is bringing awareness to your mind, body and energy.

2. Ground Your Nervous System (3–5 Minutes)

You cannot create from a dysregulated place. Try one of these gentle self care techniques:

  • Shoulder or neck stretches
  • Box breathing
  • A 30-second hand-on-heart pause
  • A calming playlist
  • Soft lighting or a candle moment

I love to do this, place one hand on your heart and one on your belly. Feel your heartbeat and your belly rise and fall with each breath. If I feel overwhelmed I come back to my breathing or my heartbeat to slow down my thoughts and reconnect with the present moment.

3. Create a “Minimum Self Care List”

Not everything belongs on your self care list; only what genuinely refills your cup. This can be different for everyone and it should be! Because you should choose to do what truly helps you re-energize.

Choose 3 to 5 small, supportive habits that re-center your energy.

Examples:

  • Step outside for 3 minutes
  • Drink a full glass of water before coffee
  • Stretch wrists and back
  • Take a 10-minute quiet break
  • A brief journal check-in
  • Intentional deep breaths
  • Look outside the window for 2 minutes

This list really can be endless, there are so many ways to re-centre your energy. Which habit you choose can also differ from day to day. The important thing is to remember to implement your re-centering habits throughout the day.

Don’t wait until you feel overwhelmed, get ahead of it and practice these habits to avoid getting overwhelmed.

4. Make Rest Part of Your Workflow (Not a Reward)

The biggest mindset shift: You don’t “earn” rest by being productive; rest is what fuels creative productivity.

Try integrating self-care ideas at home like:

  • A slow tea ritual
  • Midday stretch
  • A phone-free lunch
  • Switching to lamp lighting for a cozy, regulated environment

Make it a habit to take small moments for yourself throughout your day.

5. Build a Weekly Cozy Reset Day

Choose one day each week to unplug, call it your:

  • “Self Care Day”
  • “Cozy Reset Day”
  • “Creative Recharge Day”

Self care day ideas:

  • A spa-like shower
  • Fresh sheets or cozy blankets
  • Reading a chapter of something inspiring
  • Desk declutter
  • A walk without headphones
  • An early bedtime
cozy bath set up with candles, tea and a book

There isn’t anything like a spa like bath at home! This is one of the most grounding self care activities for women working from home. Draw yourself a bath, grab a book and a drink of your choice then unwind for the day!

Not sure where to get started with your own self care plan? Here’s a simple routine you can steal and make your own!

Morning (5–10 minutes)

  • Light a candle

  • Stand and shake out tension

  • Make yourself a warm drink and cuddle up with a blanket and your fav book!
