Stop doing “busy” work and focus on what actually moves the needle
There are a million and one things that need to be done, I know! Your to-do list never seems to end. We can re-name it our “get-to” list all we want, it’s still stuff we need to get done! Hate to admit it but I spent the first two years in business doing busy work. I was working non-stop, more than I would with a 9-5 and still at the end of the day I didn’t have much to show for myself. I was blessed to have client projects to work on but aside from that I wasn’t focusing on the right tasks that move the needle.
When I talk about busy work I am referring to doing anything and everything under the sun. When we get shiny object syndrome and want to show up on every platform to market our business. Or we rewrite our website copy, rebrand or adjust our offers. It feels like you are working hard, because you are! But the problem is, this work isn’t going to help grow your business.
Evaluate the what you are doing throughout the week
Take an hour and just start writing down all what you are spending your time on. Literally, Monday to Friday, write down what you did each day. And then take some time to reflect and honestly answer what they are doing for your business.
Is that task:
- Getting you paid, ie. client work?
- Growing your audience (lead generation)?
- Is it actually helping you book those clients?
- Is it providing any type of tangible result in your business?
As projectors, we have a limited amount of energy. Let’s start focusing it on tasks that actually make an impact on your business. Start to free up your time so you can create space to rest and play!
Simplify your offers and services
Get really clear on the services and offers you provide. Two things can happen when you offer too many services:
- Your clients can get confused or overwhelmed which can deter a client from booking.
- You are creating way more work for yourself than needed!
Client confusion and overwhelm
Think about going to a restaurant that has way too many options on the menu. How long does it take for you to decide what you want to order? It’s not necessarily a good thing to have too many options so let’s avoid this for your services!
Have one really really great offer that you want to focus on selling. This is the thing that lights you up and has an impact on your clients.
Stop creating more work for yourself!
Pick the one service you want to focus on. Iron out any kinks and create a seamless process for this. From the clients first step contacting you to providing and delivering your service. Continue to refine your process with every client project. When you feel %1000 confident with this service, from marketing to delivery, then you can think about adding on another offer/service.
Imagine how good your nervous system will feel when you’ve created a repeatable process. You don’t have to think about what the next step is in your client journey. Or worry about generating leads because you have your marketing strategy down pact.
Being a Projector in Human Design you need to minimize the work you do so you can protect your energy.
Reducing the amount of services you offer will reduce client overwhelm and help you streamline your processes; creating space for you to rest!
Work with aligned clients
Now that we have created space by getting strategic with your offers. We want to make sure the time you are spending with clients isn’t draining your energy! When you work with people who are so far out of alignment it causes you to use extra energy. Just imagine going to lunch with someone who you don’t feel aligned with, you feel like you have to be on the entire time. Vs. spending time with someone who you can just be yourself with. Just imagine the difference in your nervous system. How much more relaxed you feel when you spend time with someone you don’t have to pretend with.
I also want to mention, there’s nothing wrong with spending time with or having clients who aren’t in 100% alignment with us. I have great friends who I do feel drained or tired after seeing but I still love them and enjoy my time with them.
You just have to be discerning, what exactly do you feel after spending time with a specific personality. If you still feel good and happy just a little tired then that’s okay! Block off some time in your calendar to rest after your client meeting. But if you notice certain personalities really drain your energy and don’t make you feel good, then avoid them.
It’s hard to turn down clients especially when you’re first starting your business. But overtime you will be able to pick and choose your clients. Choose the ones that make you feel good about yourself and your services!
Focus on one marketing strategy and get really damn good at it!
I slightly touched on this earlier in the post. It’s easy to get distracted with different marketing strategies. Trust me, I really did spend my first two years in business trying to do all the things. And where did it get me?
- It sure as heck did not grow my business
- I was burnt the eff out!
Make sure you are protecting your energy by focusing on what lights you up!
We have no choice but to market our businesses! Which is ironic because most of us don’t get into business to market, we launch our business to serve others; to solve a problem. But whether we like it or not, a huge chunk of our time will go towards marketing.
I may have noticed a trend with my advice, I always want you to do what feels in alignment and lights you up. Choose a marketing strategy that you actually enjoy doing! Whatever it is, there’s no right or wrong.
But this is similar to what I shared about getting really good at one service. Get super clear on one marketing message and strategy. One platform where you can consistently show up, realistically! Once that marketing strategy feels like a well oiled machine then think about adding on another platform.
Get really good at showing up on one platform vs. dipping your toes in multiple platforms.
Create content that has the greatest ROI
In true Projector fashion, you need to get the most bang for your buck to truly protect your energy.
Everything you do should provide a direct impact on your business. Whether that is:
- Booking clients
- Growing/nurturing your community
- Client work
- Creating content to market your business
- Etc.
And when it comes to creating content, you want to be sure it is going to provide you with the greatest ROI (return on investment). Imagine spending hours creating content that not many people see or it just dies within 48 hours. That time you spent creating content, which didn’t have much impact, could be spent resting and rejuvenating your energy. Or creating content that actually does get in front of your ideal clients and helps build your audience and community.
This is exactly why I am so passionate about content marketing and blogging!
Having an SEO optimized website and a Blog can continue to attract clients for years! A blog post you write today can bring in leads for your business years from now! Isn’t that so powerful?
Living as a Projector, I know just how valuable your time and energy is. Spend it creating content that will actually work for you long term!

Create a lot of space to rest and play
Everything I have shared in this post so far has brought us to this point here! Creating as much space in your day to rest and play.
As a Projector in Human Design trying to protect your energy, you need to:
- Focus on tasks that move the needle
- So that you can have extra time in your days to spend however you please!
If you can close your eyes and just dream about a perfect day; what would it look like!? How would you spend your time? Now imagine that it’s not a dream but instead it’s your reality. You have created a business that truly supports your lifestyle vs a lifestyle to support your business. When you implement the strategies I shared above it will create time and space in your day. Start living your life and protecting your energy!
Listen to your body
I cannot tell you what you need to do in order to recharge your battery. I’m sure you’re the same as me where every single day is different. Some days, I need to lay on my couch and binge Netflix all day long. Other days, I want to spend time outdoors. Maybe go to a coffee shop and read a good mystery novel.
Listen to your body and give yourself exactly what you need during that extra time you have free’d up for yourself.
I hope you get to protect your energy and spend your days exactly how you want to!
