Is Hiring a Web Designer Worth It for Small Businesses? (Honest Breakdown)

TL;DR (Overview)

Is hiring a web designer worth it?

It is definitely worth it to invest in a Website Designer IF you have a business that is up and running and want to save time building a website. If you know your services, who your ideal client is and are clear on your brand vision and direction. If you’re not quite there yet then you can always invest in a Showit Template and customize it on your own so you have a website up and running without investing in a Designer (this is a great option when you’re just getting started!).

Here are some things to consider:

  • DIY is cheaper upfront, but costs you time and energy
  • Hiring a designer is an investment, but gives you speed, clarity, and strategy
  • The best option depends on what season you’re in in your business

Here’s a gentle starting point for you…

If you’ve been asking yourself: “should I hire a web designer or build my own website?”

You’re not alone.

Most small business owners reach a point where:

  • They’ve started a DIY site… but haven’t finished it
  • Or they’re unsure if it’s “good enough” or if they “did it right”
  • Or they simply don’t have the time anymore

And that’s where this question comes in: “is hiring a web designer worth it for small business?”

Let’s break it down in a way that actually feels clear (not overwhelming) and helps you make a decision!

What Does a Web Designer Do for Small Business?

At a basic level, what does a web designer do for small business owners?

A Web Designer will help you do a lot more than just make your website look pretty. And honestly, yes, you want your website to be pretty but it’s just as important (if not more) to have a strategic website!

A good designer helps you:

  • Structure your website so it’s easy to navigate
  • Communicate your offer clearly
  • Create a site that actually converts visitors into clients
  • Handle the tech so you don’t have to

In other words: they help you go from “I need a website”“my website is working for me”.

I work with a lot of Small Business owners with online businesses where they are the service provider. And the people who work with them pick them specifically not just the service. So it’s really important for me to create my clients a website that brings people into their world through their brand, design layout and messaging.

DIY Website vs Hiring a Web Designer

Okay, so if you’re wanting a website; these are your two options.

Let’s look at DIY website vs hiring a web designer in a real, honest way:

Option 1: DIY Website

Pros:

  • Lower upfront cost
  • Full control

Cons:

  • Time-consuming (often months)
  • Steep learning curve
  • Easy to get stuck or overwhelmed
  • Hard for you to know if you’re setting it up correctly or adding the right content

Option 2: Hiring a Designer

Pros:

  • Saves you time
  • Strategic, not just visual
  • Set up with SEO optimization (helps grow your business overtime)
  • Faster launch

Cons:

  • Higher upfront investment

The question that will help you decide between the two

The real question isn’t just about cost.

It’s: what is your time, energy, and momentum worth right now?

I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t ever recommend starting from scratch even if you choose to DIY. If you go that route you should at the very least invest in a template. I sell templates build and designed on Showit.

The reason I highly recommend investing in one of these templates is because:

  1. It gives you a starting point (choose a design you already love)
  2. They’re set up with SEO foundations
  3. Strategic layout (for SEO and User Experience)
  4. Guides you through what content you need to add
  5. BONUS: This is unique for my templates: I provide Copy Writing Guides with all my Website Templates that walks you through exactly what to write on each page.

I got into web design when I built my own website years before I learned web design. I had invested in a beautiful template, but I had no idea what to even write on it. What content to add, how to sell my services or how to optimize for SEO (I don’t think I even knew what SEO was…).

That’s why I have provided Copy writing guides and videos to walk you through exactly content you need. So, when you go to customize your own Website Template; you don’t feel lost!

How Long Does It Take to Build a Website?

This can be a huge deciding factor for you, especially if you have a specific date you want to launch by!

So how long can it take?

This will depend on which route you choose to go: Hire a Designer or DIY. But also, it really does depend on the Designers process as well. Below are the timelines for my specific web design services.

  • DIY: anywhere from weeks to months (or longer)
    • I do try and make it as easy as possible with my Showit Website Templates but it really depends on how much time you put in to it.
  • Hire a Designer – my full custom website package: 3 weeks
  • Hire a Designer  – VIP Day (my website in a day service): 1 Day

If your goal is: how to launch a website quickly… then your best bet is investing in a Designer.

The Hidden Cost of DIY (No One Talks About This)

On paper, DIY seems cheaper. But in reality, it often leads to:

  • Delayed launches
  • Missed opportunities
  • Ongoing mental load

You’re not just building a website. You are:

  • Researching platforms
  • Watching tutorials
  • Troubleshooting issues
  • Trying to figure out how to make your website work; tech wise and what content you need

That’s why so many people start… and never finish.

There is nothing wrong with starting with a Template when you’re still figuring your business out. But if you know what your business is, what you offer, who you serve, etc. Then you will need to invest in a Designer sooner or later, just depends on if you want to do it sooner or later…

How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Web Designer?

Let’s talk honestly about your financial investment:

  • DIY: $0–$500 (tools, templates)
  • Template customization (VIP Website in a Day): $2500
  • Custom design: $4500-$6500

Again, these price ranges are based on my Website Templates and Design services. Of course, you can research other templates and Designers. I’d say my pricing is not cheap but it’s not as high as a lot of Designers with a similar skillset go. And this is mostly because my prices are in CAD vs USD.

So yes, there’s a range.

But when people ask: “is a professional website worth the cost?”

What they’re really asking is:

  • Will this save me time?
  • Or will this help me get clients?
  • And is this going to grow my business?

Benefits of Hiring a Web Designer (Especially for Solopreneurs)

The biggest benefits of hiring a web designer aren’t just about design; they’re about relief.

When you invest in a Designer, you get:

  • A clear, guided website design process for small business
  • Faster launch timelines
  • Less decision fatigue
  • A site that actually supports your business
  • The peace of mind that it’s done right

I cannot tell you how many clients I have worked with who had been dabbling with customizing and publishing their own websites. They had been at it for months and within weeks of working together we had launched their website.

This has been such a relief for them. But don’t just take my word for it, here’s what Kiera from Frame of Life had to say…

“You helped me bring something on my list for 18 months to life in a few weeks!!! I’m so grateful!! What a beauty! Working with you was so fun and such a breeze! Thank you for all your help!!”

When to Hire a Web Designer

Not everyone needs a designer right away. So, when to hire a web designer?

It is worth it if you:

  1. Have been stuck in DIY for months
  2. Are ready to take your business seriously
  3. Want to save time building a website
  4. Are launching or pivoting
  5. Have a DIY website and want an upgrade

It might NOT be worth it (yet) if:

  • You’re just testing out your business idea
  • You truly have time to learn and build

So… Is Hiring a Web Designer Worth It?

Here’s the honest answer:

👉 Yes – if your goal is to move forward faster, with less stress.

👉 Not yet – if you truly have time, energy, and patience to DIY.

But for most small business owners?

It’s not about can you do it yourself.

It’s about: do you want to?

If you’re reading this and thinking: “I don’t want to spend months figuring this out…”
